New therapeutic approaches for retinal dystrophies such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of blindness in European countries and Retinosis Pigmentosa (RP), which accounts for 16% of blindness during working age (16-65 year). These new treatments are based on solid lipid nanoparticles, PLGA cationic microparticles, stimuli-responsive organic-inorganic nanospheres and encapsulated cells for delivering specific genes and/or neurotrophic factors.
Micro-fabrication tools, cell pattern technologies and tissue engineering techniques to develop “in vitro” models of the mammalian retina. These microfabricated retinal networks on a chip can be used to: 1) Understand the growth factor requirements of the different types of retinal cells, 2) Study the interaction of two, three, or more cell types in a defined system that will mimic the network properties of the retina, and 3) Develop and test novel nanoparticles, drug based and regenerative medicine based strategies to counter retinal disorders.
