Strain identification by microscopy

The BEA performs microscopy analyses for algal strain identification.

gDNA "à la carte"

The BEA is able to extract genomic DNA from microalgae cultures (from the BEA catalogue or provided by the customer*) from a wide range of volumes. We typically use kits (i.e. Macherey-Nagel and Qiagen) for routine extractions of genomic DNA.

The gDNA isolation/ identification service of the BEA is performed on a confidential basis. After the genomic DNA isolation/identification, the original culture and all prepared subcultures will be destroyed.

Strain isolation and purification

Custom isolation of cyanobacteria and microalgae from fresh field samples or other sources. The BEA has possibility to offer diferent methods for isolating strains, from tradicional manual isolation to flow cytometric cell sorting.

Price: Between 350 € and 400 €

The BEA offers the possibility to stablish clonal/axenic isolates from customers natural samples or unialgal non-axenic material.

Patent depository

As an International Depository Authority, the BEA holds strains for patents. To deposit a strain, please, read carefully the Status of International Depositary Authority by the BEA and the Depositing Request BP/1 Form which specify the information you should include regarding the strain.

Flow Cytometry

Flow cytometry is a technique to quantify and measure particles, such as cells and chromossomes, suspended in liquid. Scattered and fluorescent light emitted by the particles as they pass through a laser beam are optically directed and collected at various wavelengths.The equipment (flow cytometer) can measure several parameters (typically more than 6) simultaneously at rates of thousands of particles per second. The combination of the various parameters allows discrimination of cells in a complex population.

The technique is widely used in immunological studies, but finds also applications in biotechnology and environmental sciences. The flow cytometric facility at CBM has two Beckman-Coulter flow cytometers, one analytical machine (Cell Lab Quanta) and a sorter (Epics Altra). UV, blue and red laser lines are available.

The center is specialized in the analysis and physical separation of microalgal cells in culture or from mixed natural populations. Other aquatic microorganism (e.g. protists, bacteria, viruses) can also be analysed, as well as plant tissues (e.g. leaves) as long as the material can be suspended in liquid medium.

Quantification, cell cycle analysis, ploidy level analysis, establishment of clonal cultures are examples of applications that can be carried out in the facilities. We have scientific staff with10 years experience in the field to offer custom made solutions for specific projects / applications within microalgal biotechnology and aquatic ecology.

Acceptance of strain donations

BEA accepts strains for deposition, if they are considered to be a valuable addition to the collection. All strains will be given a BEA number. Strains deposited in the BEA are available to the public, and they cannot be withdrawn from the collection by the depositor. To donate a strain, please contact BEA.

BEA will provide for free (excluding shipping costs), the strain placed on donation, to the institution or person that donated it, provided that there is still in the collection.
