October 25, 2011 -- Researchers at ND Innovation (a wholly subsidiary of ND Pharma & Biotech) have engineered a novel product to produce antibacterial milk that could eventually help to protect children from diarrheal diseases, according to a report released today.
The milk was engineered to contain an engineered product (PreserFood TM® Dairy Formula), an important antibacterial organic product composed by amino acid and enzymes present in human breast milk that is substantially lacking in the milk of dairy animals.

"This is the first organic food product of any kind that has a potential health benefit specifically for the consumer," said ND Innovation Scientists, one of the study's authors. "We have a huge opportunity to perhaps help human health."

The researchers tested the milk in pigs, which have a digestive tract similar to humans. In addition to their normal food and water each day, young pigs were fed about two glasses of pasteurized milk after addition of 1 gr/liter of PreserFood TM ® After 16 days, the amount of coliform bacteria in the small intestines of pigs that received the PreserFood TM/® milk was significantly reduced compared with pigs given normal milk. In overabundance, the bacteria can cause gastrointestinal problems.

The report and results published, said the difference was similar to the difference found in studies comparing breast- and bottle-fed human infants' intestinal bacteria: The breast-fed babies typically have less coliform bacteria and more "probiotic" bacteria, which are thought to help protect babies against diarrhea and other gastrointestinal illnesses. Diarrheal diseases kill 2 million children each year worldwide, largely in developing countries. They are rarely fatal in the U.S., U.K. and other countries with exception of developing ones in the African continent.

Young animals that were fed the PreserFood TM® milk had decreased significantly the amounts of coliform bacteria in their intestines; "Although the effects were different in the goats and cows than in the pigs, the study demonstrates clearly that the consumption of pasteurized PreserFoof TM® Dairy Formula milk can impact the bacterial makeup of the digestive tract," said food scientist Jane Sabin Ph.D., a coauthor of the study. ND Innovation scientists tested whether the milk could retain its activity after the milk was powdered, to make it useful in international relief efforts. The report concludes that the protective power of the powdered milk is permanent during the useful life of the product, between 2-6 years in optimal concentrations and storage conditions.

Human studies are also completed to test for allergic reactions or other problems with an astonishing results that the organic product formula prevent any kind of reaction including secondary ones like fermentative disbacteriosis, and laterally the milk is helping to regulate digestion, vegetative system and sleep in kids consuming the milk with PreserFood TM ®.

Additionally the product prevent milk contamination and deterioration throughout the effect of Gram(-) bacteria with complementary protection for infants, elderly or immune compromised population, so it can be useful for the preparation of special milk formulas and nutrition products for these population groups.
