Activity
Networking Biomedical Research Center in Bioengineering,Biomaterials and Nanomedicine (CIBER-BBN), brings together some of the main Spanish research groups in the subject, including both universities and hospitals or other technological centers. Its purpose is to conduct translational research and to transfer the results of said research to industry. 49 research groups belonging to 27 different Institutions compose CIBER-BBN.
The scientific areas comprised within the CIBER-BBN are:Bioengineering and Biomedical Imaging, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering and Nanomedicine. The Center's research is focused on the development of prevention, diagnostic and follow-up systems and on technologies related to specific therapies. Within the Bioengineering and Biomedical Imaging area, the research priorities are: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, renal disease, and other chronic co-pathologies; technology for neurodegenerative diseases; cancer;integration of multimodal imaging and personalized computational modeling: application to the cardiovascular and neurological systems, and molecular imaging technologies. In the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering area, research is encompassed in the following lines:surface optimization for implants, development and characterization of scaffolds and epigenetics of cell proliferation and differentiation. The Nanomedicine area research is focused in the following areas: development of nanoparticles, biomarkers, development of nanostructures, biofunctionalization, treatment, drug delivery, molecular characterization, biosensors and validation.
In addition to that, CIBER-BBN counts with an Equipment Platform Program that promotes the sharing of modern, high-tech equipment with the technical expertise necessary to ensure the most productive use of such equipment, effective experimental design and interpretation of data obtained. This program is constituted by 5 platforms, which in form are composed by one or more units or services open to external user under established conditions. The 5 platforms and the services that include are: High-Performance Computing Platform, Production of Biomolecules Platform (including the services of Production of Proteins, Antibodies and Peptides), Production of Biomaterials and Nanoparticles Platform (units of Biodeposition of biomolecules on surfaces, Rapid Prototyping for production of 3D matrices of different biomaterials, Biomaterial Processing and Nanostructuring, Nanolithography, Micro-Nanoelectronics and Synthesis of Nanoparticles), Tissue, Biomaterial and Surface Characterization Platform (units of Molecule Detection by Multiparametric Fluorescence, Nanostructured Liquid Characterization, Tissue & Scaffold Characterization, Functional Characterization of Magnetic Nanoparticles, and Calorimetry and Surface Characterization unit) and the Bioimaging Platform (including In vivo Experimental Unit and the two services of NMR for Biomedical Applications).
All these services are coordinated under the umbrella of CIBER-BBN, as a single contact point model, offering the possibility of participating in collaborative projects involving the required units as one only partner.
